OTT for sure has become more popular during COVID. Most of the films including biggies are being available for streaming with in a month of theatrical release. This Sankranti, we have four big films and a small film in theaters. Let’s see which OTT platforms have bagged their streaming rights.
Balakrishna’ Veera Simha Reddy and Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya are the most sought after films this season. The two mass entertainers are doing extremely well at the boxoffice. Waltair Veerayya and Veera Simha Reddy post theatrical streaming rights were bagged by Netflix and Disney Plus Hotstar respectively.
The Tamil films Varisu and Thunivu which are dubbed into Telugu as Vaarasudu and Tegimpu have garnered mixed responses. The films might not perform well at the boxoffice considering the current trend of direct Telugu releases. Vaarsudu digital rights were bagged by Prime Video while Netflix bought the streaming rights of Tegimpu.
Small film Kalyanam Kamaneeyam which had positive buzz after the trailer launch, was targeted for family audience and hit the screens today. The film has got mediocre reviews and will struggle to put good boxoffice numbers. However, the makers are already in profitable zone as they had breakeven with prerelease business. The film’s OTT rights were bagged by Aha.
It remains to be seen who will become Sankranti winner this year.
