Penguin Movie Review

STORY: Rhythm(Keerthy Suresh) is a pregnant lady who lives with her husband in a small town near a forest. Her elder son Ajay(Master Advaith) goes missing in the forest six years back. Everyone believes that the boy might have died but Rhythm still believes her son is alive and keeps searching for him often in the forest. There will be a talk in the town that a murderer in on the loose. Who is that person and how is that person connected to Rhythm and whether she could save her children forms the rest of the story.

PERFORMANCES: Keerthy Suresh has nailed it. Her performance as a pregnant mother was top notch. She is the core of the film and her emotional performance in the second half is definitely her career’s best after Mahanati. The performance by the actor who played as a psychiatrist was good. Master Advaith was amazing in his role. All the other cast have justified their roles.

TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT: Director Karthik Subbaraj has done a good job in the first half with the gripping scenes. But towards the end, revealing factors in the film are quite dull and the big twist in the climax is similar to so many other films. Music and BGM were apt for the scenes.

Dialogues were good but one can feel the Tamil flavour in dialogue delivery. Dubbing should have been done better.

Camera work is good and production values are top-notch. excellent job by narrating the story well. Especially the detailing in the investigation scenes was quite engaging. The suspense was carried out until the end of the film. Cinematography is decent and Editing is alright. Screenplay is decent in handling the past and present.

PLUS POINTS:

  • Keerthy Suresh
  • Screenplay
  • BGM

MINUS POINTS:

  • Dubbing
  • Climax is not as convincing

VERDICT: Penguin starts off as an Engaging Thriller and keeps you hooked until the final act which turns out to a bit underwhelming based on how much importance you place on endings. However, everything except the climax will be reminiscent of a Hollywood thriller. It has it’s up and downs but ultimately has enough depth to pull through as a decent thriller.
