Master Movie Review

STORY:

JD(Vijay) is a professor at a college where all the students love him but the management wants to get rid of him as he doesn’t obey the rules and is a drunkard. After an issue at the college, JD joins as a master at a correction facility to handle young criminals.

On the other hand, Bhavani(Vijay Sethupathi) illegally controls the correction facility to build his criminal empire by exploiting the youth. Will JD be able to find what is happening at the facility and free the youth by taking on Bhavani forms the rest of the story.

PERFORMANCES:

Vijay is too good in his role and his swag was just awesome. He nailed it as a drunkard professor and his performance in mass scenes was also impressive. It will be an eye feast for the fans to see their master’s performance. Vijay Sethupathi manages to steal the show. He is fierce and cool in his role. Audience will enjoy his presence throughout the film.

Malavika Mohanan is neat in her role. Her screen presence was less but she did a good job. Arjun Das is apt in his role. Andrea Jeremiah is admirable, while others only have fleeting appearances.

TECHNICAL DEPARTMENT:

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has done a great job by bringing the two stars together and also balanced the two characters very well throughout. However, there are no confrontation scenes between the duo until the climax which is a bit disappointing.

Also, the film run time of the film is lengthy and the narration is slow. The story is predictable and at least 15 minutes of the film should have been edited for a gripping screenplay. Emotional aspect is also missing in the film.

Action sequences were composed well. Production values are good. Dubbing is good. Songs are just OK and the BGM by Anirudh is superb. Cinematography is decent. College setup was good and the most of the scenes look natural.

PLUS POINTS:

  • Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi
  • BGM
  • Fight scenes and the Climax

MINUS POINTS:

  • Predictable story
  • Editing
  • Emotional aspect missing

VERDICT:

Master is a passable action entertainer that has two stars outperforming in their respective roles. However, the director failed to utilize them to full affect as the confrontation scenes of the duo come only during the climax. If you ignore the slow narration and keep your expectations low then it is definitely watchable thanks to the lead duo.
